COVID-19 and #BlackLivesMatter has transformed public health.
The field of public health will forever be changed by the current moments. On March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the spread of novel coronavirus, COVID-19, a pandemic. Through the following months, public health students grappled with applying theory and coursework to an imminent issue. Slowly, we began to understand how globalization, capitalism, and other social factors such as racism influence health outcomes during the pandemic.
As unemployment rose and states began to declare states of emergency, the murder of George Floyd caught international attention. His murder, like the murders of so many others by the hands of the police, was a tragic event related to the continuation of systematic racism caused by white supremacy throughout the penal system. These dual issues provided opportunities for public health practitioners to intervene upstream in creating a more just world.
Ideas for submitting to Intervene Upstream
We call on you to submit pieces related to:
- Racism, and Anti-Racism in Public Health
- Explicit and implicit bias in public health, healthcare, nursing, etc.
- Building an anti-racist curriculum in public health.
- Book, film, and media reviews related to anti-racist movements or understanding racism.
- Histories of public health and race.
- COVID-19 and Race.
- Consequences/Side-Effects of COVID-19 (e.g., employment, access to healthcare)
- Perspectives on the increasing use of telemedicine (esp in face of COVID-19) such as in outpatient visits, mental health counseling, etc.
- Local organization efforts on COVID-19 relief for communities.
- Graduate student reflections and ideas about pandemic coursework, remote learning, accommodations, etc.
- Virtual conferences and the future of digital-based scholarship.
- Consequences of COVID-19 related to unemployment, electoral politics, radical politics, etc.
Important information for submission:
Types of submissions: We accept a broad range of formats: poetry, film, photography, illustrations, prose, sculpture, fiction, mixed media, audio, sketches, graphic designs, non-fiction essays. Most of our pieces are similar to op-ed pieces.
